DEPCO's mission is to enhance the learning environment by offering curriculum that takes the intimidation and confusion out of learning for both students and instructors. DEPCO (Dependable Education Products Company) maintains an innovative, student-driven focus utilizing an interactive approach to learning activities. Learning retention is maximized through the use of hands-on activities, rather than relying solely on textbook exclusive memorization.

Learning Labs, Inc. is proud to represent DEPCO's Health Science Education Series.  This series is correlated to the National Health Care Skills Standards established by the National Consortium on Health Science Education to create an educationally sound, standards-driven curriculum with specific, hands-on skill sets. Both programs have also been correlated to many states. The two programs include:


  • Health Science Foundations - Eleven units totaling 120-150 hours delivered in a web browser format accompanied by lesson plans for instructor-led activities.

  • Career Pathways - a high-level, multimedia modular curriculum designed to give students knowledge and hands-on experience in specific career areas; educators can use the curriculum as either independent or lock-step group study.

Health Science Foundations

Health Science Foundations offers a great way to teach the Accountability Criteria for the National Healthcare Skill Standards established by the National Consortium for Health Science Education.

Our Foundations course covers all 11 of the Foundation Standards and Accountability Criteria totaling 120–150 hours of material and activities.  The 11 standards include:

  • Academic Foundations

  • Communications

  • Systems

  • Employability Skills

  • Legal Responsibilities

  • Ethics

  • Safety Practices

  • Teamwork

  • Health Maintenance Practices

  • Technical Skills

  • Information Technology Applications

Within each lesson, students complete an online study that teaches specific information about that unit’s accountability criteria. Most studies conclude with an assessment measuring the student’s comprehension of the subject matter.

Next, teachers use lesson plans and suggested activities, such as role-playing, projects, and group activities, from the Instructor’s Guide to reinforce the accountability criteria within the health care environment. Rubrics are included to assist teachers in assessing group and individual performances.

The Foundations course is available as a two-year program/site license. We regularly update the curriculum so it reflects current issues and maintains a fresh presentation in the classroom.  The initial two-year school-wide unlimited license entitles one campus to use the Health Science Foundations courseware on an unlimited number of computers for a period of two years. Students can access the course anywhere the Internet is available. Includes Instructor's Guide.

DEPCO's Health Science catalog

Career Pathways

Every Health Science Career Pathway Unit (CPU) comes complete with all of the necessary equipment and materials. Each CPU also comes with enough consumable materials for at least 24 students. Virtually all of these materials fit in or on the supplied cart.

Each Health Science CPU is 15 activities long, which represents 15-20 hours worth of work. Students spend the first 12 activities following step-by-step instructions and covering a great deal of career-based information. If possible, the students spend Activities 13 and 14 in job shadowing activities. If this option is not possible, alternative activities are provided.


The layout and format is consistent from CPU to CPU. For example, every activity begins with an inventory of the CPU materials ensuring both student and instructor that all materials are in the CPU area and in working condition. At the end of each activity, students are to complete a "critical thinking" step where they respond to a scenario or question. This consistency keeps students from having to learn different formats as they rotate from CPU to CPU, which means they're spending less time navigating the system and more time learning the material.


Each Health Science CPU also makes use of DEPCO Studio, DEPCO's computer-based delivery system. The students use DEPCO Studio to launch software, watch videos, take tests, and more.

Each CPU starts with a computer-based Pre-Test and ends with a Post-Test. These tests help assess how much material the student learned by the end of the CPU.  

As the students work through the activities, they will define 20 vocabulary words and complete numerous computer-based quizzes. These quizzes offer a variety of question styles, including multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, hot spot, and true and false. Each question must be answered correctly before the student can continue through the quiz. A help screen is displayed when a student answers a question incorrectly.


Many of the CPUs also make use of "Checkpoints," which are computer-based "tests" the instructor takes to verify that students are properly completing hands-on activities.

Each CPU comes with an Instructor's Overview (IO). The IO contains answer keys and source locators to the Pre- and Post-Test, quizzes, and vocabulary words; a Notes to the Instructor section that outlines important information the instructor needs to know and implement in order for the CPU to run smoothly; and each activity's objectives. The IO also contains any work sheets that may need to be passed out.  All of these resources are available as PDFs, meaning an instructor can open any IO and reprint pages that might have been lost or damaged.
